Doncaster Mile 2012 – Final Field Released

April 17th, 2012

The final field has been released for the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, which is set to run at Royal Randwick racecourse this Saturday April 21, 2012.

A total of 22 horses have accepted for the 2012 Doncaster Mile final field, with Happy Trails and All Legal making up the two emergencies for the race.

Included in the 2012 Doncaster Handicap final field is Rangirangdoo, who finished sixth in the Group 1 George Ryder at Rosehill Racecourse last start.

Trainer Chris Waller was initially unsure over whether Rangirangdoo would start in the 2012 Doncaster Mile, however, opted to give the seven-year-old a shot.

While he is concerned with the large weight of 58 kilograms Rangirangdoo is require to carry, Waller felt it would be the gelding’s last shot at winning a Doncaster Mile.

“After speaking with his owners I couldn’t really come up with a good enough excuse not to run,” Waller said yesterday.

“Realistically I think he might struggle with the weight (58kg) but he is not getting any younger and we probably won’t have another chance to run in a Doncaster.”

The trainer will then consider running the Pentire gelding in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes on Saturday April 28, 2012.

“If he comes through the Doncaster without any issues he will press on to the Queen Elizabeth,” he said.

More Joyous is also included in the 2012 Doncaster Mile final field.

The five-year-old mare was the short priced favourite to win the Doncaster Mile last year, however, failed to handle the Heavy 10-rated track.

Owner John Singleton’s racing manager Duncan Grimley made it clear that More Joyous would not compete in those conditions again.

“It’s all weather-dependent with her; we will never run her again on the heavy after last time,” Grimley said.

“We just happened to strike them on Slipper day and Doncaster day – two of the most important days of the year we struck heavy 10s. We won’t be doing that again.”
