Yosei In Box Seat For 2012 Doncaster Mile Win

April 20th, 2012

Jockey Michelle Payne is full of confidence ahead of the 2012 Doncaster Mile, after Yosei drew barrier one for the race.

It is the same barrier she has drawn before winning two of her three Group 1 starts.

“I couldn’t believe it. What are the odds?” Payne said.

“I was rapt. It’s worked twice. Who says it can’t work three times?”

Payne is hopeful she can display the same patience that helped win Yosei the Group 1 Sires Produce Stakes and the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara.

“I think the key to both her wins from barrier one has been that I didn’t panic,” she said.

“You just have to wait and others tend to panic a bit and start making runs and the gaps start appearing.

“She’s so game, she’ll take any gap, even the tiniest gap, that appears.

“She gives me so much confidence.”

Yosei has won four of her 23 race starts and has earned more than $937,000 in prize money.

Race favourite More Joyous, who is currently paying odds of $5.50 at bookmaker.com.au, is now a likely starter in the 2012 Doncaster Mile.

While word originally was that the connections would not run her on a heavy track, trainer Gai Waterhouse is confident More Joyous will still run well.

“The day she won the Thousand Guineas (bursting up the inside from barrier five), the track was slow but raced heavy,” Waterhouse said.

“She ran poorly in a Myer Classic on a heavy track but pulled up with the thumps and had an excuse. It won’t bother her at all.”

More Joyous has won both her previous race starts this autumn, with her most recent being in the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes.
