Pierro To Contend With Heavy Weight In 2013 Doncaster Mile

April 18th, 2013

Pierro will have to contend with his heavy weight if he wants to continue his flawless autumn carnival in the 2013 Doncaster Mile.

The three-year-old has been assigned 57 kilograms in the race, which is just one kilogram less than the much older top weight Shoot Out.

Pierro will carry more than any other three-year-old in the race due to his impressive career record that boasts five Group 1 wins.

The Lonhro colt has won 11 of his 13 race starts in total and has earned more than $4.1 million in prize money.

Trainer Gai Waterhouse is not upset by the heavy weight and feels that Pierro will still be able to claim a win in the 2013 Doncaster Mile.

“Weight stops a train, will it stop Pierro?” Waterhouse said.

“Fifty seven kilograms. I can’t think of a three-year-old in recent history who has been asked to lumber such a big weight. It’s a massive weight but he’s earned it.”

Waterhouse actually voiced her support for giving the best horses big weights in order to adhere to the true Handicap conditions.

“But they won’t do it because trainers blow up and they shouldn’t,” she said.

“Horses deserve it and it makes it more interesting.

“It probably just means the good horses don’t run in handicaps, they run in the weight-for-age races.”

Pierro is currently the $2.40 favourite to win the 2013 Doncaster Mile at bookmaker.com.au.
