2014 Doncaster Mile Final Field Confirmed

April 8th, 2014

Trainer Chris Waller is set to dominate the running of the 2014 Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick this weekend, having accepted positions in the final field of the major race for six of his stable’s stars.

Run on the first day of The Championships along with three other major Group 1 races, the Doncaster Mile will this year feature a capacity field of 20 runners, with two emergencies; Malavio and Gypsy Diamond confirmed to fill the places of any possible scratchings.

Boban arguably leads Waller six-pronged attack on the 2014 Doncaster Mile, and will be joined in the final field by My Kingdom Of Fife, Sacred Falls, Hawkspur, Royal Descent and Weary.

The standout performer of the 2013 Spring Racing Carnival, Boban secured an impressive five wins from as many starts, including both the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m).

Returning to the track in less-than-convincing form initially this season, the talented Bernardini gelding was unable to justify favouritism when fifth in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) first-up; likewise when fourth in the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) on February 22nd.

Returning to his ideal distance of one mile in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m), with highly successful partner Glyn Schofield returning to the saddle, Boban finally returned to the winner’s circle, adding a third major title to his glittering tally.

Despite being unable to overcome poor track conditions when seventh in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) last time out, Waller is confident Boban is the runner to beat in the 2014 Doncaster Mile this weekend.

Amassing seven wins and 10 places from only 27 race starts, My Kingdom Of Fife spent nearly two and a half years in the paddock after suffering a tendon injury, and while yet to reach strong condition over two race starts since returning, will be offered a good chance of improvement if allocated a favourable barrier.

Sacred Falls was unlucky to finish fourth in both the Group 1 Canterbury Stakes (1300m) and Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) in his only two race starts this season.

Winner of the 2013 edition of the Doncaster Mile, Waller is confident of a return to the winner’s circle this weekend and offered a good chance at title defence from Sacred Falls.

Touted as one to watch over the 2013 spring, Hawkspur was incapable to match the hype that seemed to follow his preparation from race to race, unable claim another victory after an impressive run in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) early in his campaign and closing a disappointing 20th in the major Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m).

Securing a total of four wins and five places from only 14 race starts so far, Royal Descent is a proven performer in major autumn races, winning both the Group 3 Adrian Knox Stakes (2000m) and Group 1 Australian Oaks (2400m) over his 2013 preparation.

Steadily building to the task at hand this time in, Weary finished third in the Group 1 TAB Rewards Maiden (1400m) first-up on February 15th, second in the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) on March 22nd and first in last weekend’s Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m); gaining a ballot-free entry into this weekend’s major Doncaster Mile.

The barrier draw for the 2014 Doncaster Mile will be held at Royal Randwick as part of an official opening of the inaugural The Championships this evening.
