2014 Doncaster Mile Betting Preview and Tips

April 11th, 2014

A capacity field of 20 runners have accepted a position in the final field of the 2014 Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick this weekend, offering punters a particularly generous betting market.

Having returned to racing in typically scintillating form this preparation, Messene is currently leading betting markets for success in the 2014 Doncaster Mile at a quote of $4.60, ahead of market mover Weary ($6), Hawkspur ($9.50), Sacred Falls, Royal Descent and El Roca; sharing the third line of betting at current $12 odds.

Can Messene break through for a maiden Group 1 victory in the 2014 Doncaster Mile, or will one of her talented rivals find the line in the clear?

Speediness ($17)

Amassing seven wins and ten places from 20 race starts to date, Speediness has steadily built to the task in four races this preparation; finishing an unlucky second behind Gordon Lord Byron in the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) last time out. Allocated the ideal inside barrier for the 2014 Doncaster Mile, the Testa Rossa gelding will be partnered by champion jockey Damien Oliver and is in prime position to break through for a maiden victory at the highest level of Australian racing this weekend.

El Roca ($12)

Securing an impressive record of three wins and four places from only eight competitive race starts so far, El Roca has displayed the potential of a successful champion, despite yet to break through for a Group 1 victory. Debuting with a strong win in the Listed Eskimo Prince Stakes (1200m) first-up before battling hard for second in the Group 3 Liverpool City Cup, the Fastnet Rock colt was unlucky when pipped on the line in the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) by classy rival Dissident on March 15th, and again displayed his diversity when running on for third on a soft course in the George Ryder last time out. While allocated the awkward barrier 17 for the Doncaster Mile, El Roca’ chances of success will be boosted by leading jockey Glen Boss.

Boban ($19)

The undeniable performer of the 2013 spring, Boban secured a perfect record of five wins from as many starts including both the Group 1 Epson Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Emirates Stakes (1600m). Initially returning to the track in questionable form, the Bernardini gelding stamped his claims as the country’s leading miler in his third appearance for the year, sprinting well to claim the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) on March 8th. While required to carry a race-high 58kgs this weekend, Boban will be partnered by regular jockey Glyn Schofield and is hard to overlook at this distance.
