Sacred Falls is the 2014 Doncaster Mile Winner

April 12th, 2014

Talented stallion Sacred Falls has made it back-to-back victories in the Doncaster Mile (1600m), breaking clear of the pack to win this afternoon’s major Group 1 race at Royal Randwick on day 1 of The Championships.

Breaking from the gates fairly, the O’reilly entire settled within the pack, allowing early leaders Fat Al, Streama and Messene to set a fair tempo.

Rounding onto the final straight in prime position, Sacred Falls quickly broke from the pack, locking in a strong sprint with stable mate Royal Descent and eventually finding the line a neck in the clear; delivering trainer Chris Waller an impressive first four with Weary and Hawkspur finishing third and fourth respectively.

Waller was understandably thrilled with the positive result in the 2014 Doncaster Mile, laying all the credit on Sacred Falls and the choice for an extended spell.

“A great team effort” Waller said following the 2014 Doncaster Mile.

“He’s a great horse, it just went a bit pear shaped in the spring and Bruce Sherwin bit the bullet and took him back to New Zealand to spell, we gave him a longer spell to make sure he was right for this race.

“Today was the day; he’s an outstanding colt – talk about $20 million horses, this horse has been forgotten and he’s the next, don’t worry about that.”

Hong Kong-based jockey Zac Purton returned to take the ride of Sacred Falls in the 2014 Doncaster Mile and delivered a sensational ride on the back-to-back champion.

“Obviously he did it last year with no weight on his back and he hasn’t won a race since but has been racing really, really well” Purton said immediately after dismounting Sacred Falls.

“Obviously the wet track has helped him here again today but not many horses win back-to-back Doncasters so he’s done a really good job.

“I thought his run the other day was good; he ran a little bit flat but he ran flat last year when he won this race as well, so it was a pattern but I thought he’d do it again.

“To get this opportunity and get the job done, of course it’s very satisfying.”

Having returned to the winner’s circle in the 2014 Doncaster Mile, Sacred Falls is now close to an assured starter in next weekend’s major $4 million Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m). is currently offering the best odds on all remaining races throughout the 2014 spring, including the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes!
