Estonian Princess Vying for 2015 Doncaster Mile Entry

December 11th, 2014

Four-year-old mare Estonian Princess is in good form ahead of the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) this Saturday at Royal Randwick Racecourse after finishing just a nose behind I’m Imposing in the Listed Festival Stakes (1500m) last time out.

The mare took a trail on the leaders before easing around the heels to get a clear run. She split one off the fence and looked the winner before just getting grabbed late. Estonian Princess’ trainer Scott Aspery believes the mare should have won the Festival Stakes.

“There is a kilo-and-a-half turnaround in her favour and it’s a benefit to her but I honestly think if she had clear running in the Festival she would have won that and won it quite convincingly,” the trainer told Sky Racing.

Either way the run has helped Estonian Princess in the Villiers Stakes betting market at Ladbrokes.com.au, as she sits comfortably at $7 on the third line of betting along with Rose Of Choice.

However, as usual her connections have their eyes on a bigger prize. A win in the 2014 Villiers Stakes would earn Estonian Princess exemption into the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) on April 11, which her autumn campaign would then be tailored around.

“It would be nice for us to get a win in the Villiers, send her out with that on the board as a reward for her consistency over the preparation,” Aspery said.

“The carrot with the Villiers is the Doncaster exemption. That would be nice to have in the back pocket for the autumn.

“Obviously there is the Queen Of The Turf Stakes for her but if she wins the Villiers, the Doncaster is there.

“And you’re not under pressure to qualify and move up the order of entry to get into a race like that because, with the prize money the way it is for the autumn now, everybody wants to get into a race like the Doncaster.”

Estonian Princess will jump from barrier seven with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle, who returns from suspension.
