2015 Doncaster Mile May Figure for Merion

January 13th, 2015

Securing three impressive race wins over his short six start career so far, trainer Michael Moroney has revealed he is yet to settle on a path for black type winner Merion through the 2015 Autumn Carnival, however a berth in the major Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) during The Championships is not out of the question.

Running fourth in the Listed McKenzie Stakes (1200m) to begin his 2014 spring campaign, Merion charged home to take out the Listed Living Legends Stakes (1400m) on September 13th before placing a credible sixth in the featured Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (1600m) on October 11th.

Last seen placing a forgettable ninth in the Group 3 Caulfield Classic (2000m) on October 18th, Moroney told Racing Victoria he is yet to settle on a first point of call for the O’reilly gelding this time in, who may progress towards a berth in the Doncaster Mile, should form and results dictate such a path.

“We’re going to give him a jump out at Werribee on Friday week and then we’ll make a decision on which race he kicks off,” Moroney said.

“The C.S. Hayes Stakes (1400m) will definitely be one of his runs, whether it’s his first or his second run is the question.

“He missed the Derby, so we were able to get him out a week earlier and give him a good spell and he’s really well.

“If he does run over 2000 it will be in the Rosehill Guineas, he might be a horse that we run in the Doncaster instead.”

Stamping his claims as one to watch when charging home to take out the First Light Racing Handicap (1300m) on debut in March 2014, Merion jumped from the gates only fairly in the Listed Anzac Day Stakes (1410m) on April 25th, but displayed an exceptional turn of foot in the final straight to find the line half a length in the clear of closest rival Light Up Manhattan.
