2016 Doncaster Mile an Option for Suavito

January 15th, 2016

Trainer Nigel Blackiston has been pleased with the continually building form of Suavito in the lead-up to her return from injury and has revealed the Group 1 winner will be set for a race like the 2016 Doncaster Mile (1600m) should weather conditions suit.

Suavito undoubtedly found career-best form to date through the 2015 edition of the Autumn Carnival; winning each of the Group 1 Futurity Stakes (1400m) and Group 2 Blamey Stakes (1600m) in succession before running a credible seventh in the Doncaster Mile despite failing to handle the rain-soaked Randwick course.

Suavito performed well in a jump out at Flemington on Friday and Blackiston is confident the mare will again prove a force to be reckoned with through her Group 1-geared preparation during the 2016 Autumn Carnival.

“It was her first trial following the long layoff and she just had a nice, easy trial and did it very smoothly,” Blackiston told Racing Victoria.

Damien (Oliver) was very happy with the way she felt.

“She’s done really well during her break. She’s come back bigger and stronger and I think both mentally and physically she’s improved again.

“She’ll trial again in two weeks and then we’ve got to work out whether we kick her off in the Orr Stakes or wait until the Futurity Stakes which she won last year.

“We’ll put in a nomination for the Australian Cup and then you’ve also got the Sydney Championships and races like the Doncaster and Queen Of The Turf to consider as well.

“She ran terrific in the (Doncaster) last year on a bottomless track where she finished seventh and never handled the going at all.”

“Obviously we’ve got to be very wary as I think she can handle a certain amount of softness in the track but when it’s as heavy as it was last year she doesn’t get through it all and Sydney’s notoriously been heavy and extremely wet the last few years.

“We’ll keep her here as long as we can and if Sydney’s dry then we’ll head up there.”

Suavito has been a strong and consistent performer for Blackiston since first appearing on course competitively in 2013; posting seven wins and as many minors through only eighteen career starts.
