2016 Doncaster Mile the Target for Good Project

January 21st, 2016

Good Project delivered a classy field defeat in the Group 1 Railway Stakes (1600m) in Perth in early November, and trainer Chris Waller has revealed the horse will be set on a path towards the 2016 Doncaster Mile (1600m) upon resuming this time.

Good Project returned to racing for a convincing win in the Mack Trucks BM85 (1200m) at Rosehill Gardens in early spring and continued producing sound efforts to finish within the first three in his next three starts; highlighted by success in the Bartier Perry Lawyers BM92 (1600m) on October 17th.

Savaging the line for a credible second behind Malaguerra in the Lavazza Short Black (1400m) at Flemington on Melbourne Cup Day, Waller’s decision to head west with the four-year-old paid dividends when he beat the likes of Messene, Black Heart Bart and Delicacy to the line in the Railway Stakes.

The son of Not A Single Doubt has reportedly taken plenty of benefit from his time away from racing and while conceded the Perth form is not a keen indicator of a Sydney Autumn, Waller is confident the horse will measure up to a race like the 2016 Doncaster Mile this time.

“I would be the first to admit that the Western Australian form is not as strong as our spring and autumn form,” Waller said

“He was well-placed to win a $1 million race and we have to find the next way to win some more money as well.

“He will start in a pretty simple race, being the Liverpool City Cup, and then he will most likely run in a race like the Ajax and then go into the Doncaster as a lightweight chance.

“Being a colt and already a Group 1 winner, if he could win a Doncaster down in the weights that really would stamp himself as a colt because you can’t really go to stud on a Western Australian Group 1 win at the moment.”

Good Project has posted a commendable five race wins and eleven minors through his 21 competitive starts so far, and is currently available at 2016 Doncaster Mile odds of $21 in early betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au.
