2016 Doncaster Mile an Option for Rudy

February 17th, 2016

Trainer Helen Page was pleased with the performance mustered by stable star Rudy in a barrier trial earlier this week and has revealed the gelding may make a second appearance in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) during the 2016 Autumn Carnival.

Rudy has been a strong and consistent performer for Page since first appearing on course competitively in 2013; posting seven wins and a further eight minors through 30 competitive starts so far.

Having gained a start in last year’s Doncaster Mile after taking out the Group 2 Villiers Stakes on the Randwick mile course, Page has underlined the Group 3 JRA Cup (2000m) a fortnight after the first day of The Championships as the major target for the Red Dazzler gelding; highlighted the Doncaster Mile as a possible step in the lead-up.

“Rudy did it pretty easily in the trial and Tegan (Harrison) didn’t knock him around. I think we will give him another trial before he comes back to the races,” Page told AAP.

“I am looking for something up here for his first start back but ideally I would like a 1350-metre race.

“But his owner Tom Clarke is keen to start him first-up over 1600m so we will have to see what is around here and in Sydney.

“At this stage the JRA Plate is his main mission this autumn. It is over 2000 metres and Tom is keen to try him at a middle distance.”

Rudy returned to racing in 2015 for a close second behind It’s Somewhat in the Group 3 Liverpool Cup (1300m); progressing to eighth place finishes in each of the Group 2 Ajax Stakes (1500m) and Group 3 Doncaster Prelude (1500m) before produce a big effort to finish fourth in the Doncaster Mile.

Resuming in spring for third in a Doomben minor over 1350m, Rudy finished third in the Group 2 Tramway Stakes (1400m) and second in the Group 3 Bill Ritchie Handicap (1400m) but failed to make anything of an impact when twelfth in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m).

Running tenth in the Group 2 Crystal Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on October 24th, Rudy capped his year ninth in each of the Listed Symphony Stakes (1800m) and Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) in Victoria.
