Bowman Thrilled With Winx Ahead of 2016 Doncaster Mile

March 29th, 2016

Jockey Hugh Bowman has been understandably thrilled with the results posted by Winx this time, and is confident the champion mare will be tough to beat in Saturday’s featured 2016 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Royal Randwick.

Winx more than stamped herself as arguably the country’s best race horse through the recent Spring Carnival but has returned to competition in typically slick form; posting wins in each of the Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m), Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) so far.

Having completed a strong piece of work on Tuesday morning, Bowman told Racing Ahead the Street Cry mare is without doubt the best mare he has ever ridden and is hopeful she will again muster her best in Saturday’s 2016 Doncaster Mile.

“I’m very excited to say the least,” Bowman said.

“It’s a privilege to have the opportunity to ride these horses.

“She really is an angel – there’s no nonsense about her. She’s very feminine, so she’s quite soft and there’s nothing nasty about her.

“Some of the good mares or fillies I’ve ridden are either masculine or have real attitude but she is neither. She has a will to win and an engine like I’ve never witnessed before.

“She looks well placed, obviously she was dominant when she won the Epsom and I questioned that form myself going into the Cox Plate. She’s certainly taken it all before her since then.

“She’s a wonderful horse and I’m hoping just as much as everyone else that we see the best from her this weekend.”

Winx has been a standout for trainer Chris Waller through her entire racing career so far; posting twelve wins and a further three minors through only eighteen starts.

Capping a standout 2015 autumn and winter campaign with a maiden win at the highest level in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), Winx resumed in spring for success in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m) before taking out each of the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) and Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) in particularly dominant fashion.
