March 28th, 2017

Trainer Chris Waller has supplied four runners in the final field of twenty plus three emergencies in the 2017 Group 1 $3m The Star Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick on day one of ‘The Championships’ on Saturday.

Waller is chasing his fifth straight win and seventh overall win in the Doncaster Mile after wins with Triple Honour (2008), Rangirangdoo (2010), Sacred Falls (2013, 2014), Kermadec (2015) and Winx (2016).

There is no Winx this year but Waller will saddle up European imports Arod (barrier 7), Endless Drama (20) and McCreery (17) and New Zealand bred Antonio Giuseppe (6).

McCreery is the most fancied of the Waller Doncaster Mile quartet at $9 with Ladbrokes.com.au while four year old Antonio Giuseppe is the next of the stable’s runner in the betting at $13 while Endless Drama is marked at $17 and Arod is one of the outsiders of the at $40.

McCreery scored a good first up win in the Group 3 $150,000 Liverpool City Cup (1300m) at Randwick on February 25 but was never in the hunt on a heavy 10 when fifth to super star stablemate Winx in the Group 1 $1m China Horse Club George Ryder (1500m) at Rosehill on March 18.

$6 favourite Le Romain has drawn barrier eight with Hugh Bowman taking over from Glyn Schofield who rode the Kris Lees trained four year old last start for a second to Winx in the George Ryder.

Le Romain’s Sydney Autumn Carnival form is hard to fault and previous to running second to Winx scored a first up win in the Group 3 $150,000 The Chi-X Southern Cross Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on February 13 followed by a win in the Group 1 $500,000 BMW Canterbury Stakes (1300m) at Randwick on March 4.

Lees will also saddle up $67 chance Sense Of Occasion who has drawn barrier ten with Corey Brown to ride.

Trainer John O’Shea will also have multiple runners in the Doncaster Mile with top weight Hauraki and European imports It’s Somewhat and Spectroscope.

Hauraki has drawn wide at sixteen with James Doyle to ride and is the best fancied of the Godolphin runners at $9 alongside of McCreery coming off a last start fourth to Winx in the George Ryder.

Spectroscope raced into Doncaster Mile calculations with two wins from two starts on Australia soil in a 1350m BenchMark 89 Handicap on March 11 and in the Group 3 $150,000 Rydges Parramatta Doncaster Prelude (1500m) at Rosehill on March 25 but his luck changed at the barrier draw when he was allocated barrier twenty two out of a possible twenty-three but could jump from gate nineteen if all three emergencies fail to get a run.

Spectroscope is listed as a $13 chance while It’s Somewhat is marked at $26.

Hong Kong based Zac Purton rides O’Shea’s third runner It’s Somewhat who has drawn barrier nine and was quick to find form in the Autumn with a first up win in the Group 2 $200,000 Hyland Ajax Stakes (1500m) at Rosehill on March 11.

The Lindsay Park Team of David and Ben Hayes and Tom Dabernig will saddle up two runners in the Doncaster Mile, Dibayani and Redkirk Warrior with both coming up with double digit barriers.

Redkirk Warrior, barrier fifteen with Regan Bayliss to ride, looked very good with his first up win in the Group 1 $1.25m Lexus Newmarket Handicap (1200m) at Flemington on March 11 while Dibayani is coming off a last start ninth to It’s Somewhat in the Ajax Stakes.
